What is Reiki?

Updated: Mar 13, 2020

“What is Reiki?” I hear you ask …

Well let me tell you …

To begin with, let's see what some of the official Reiki organisations have to say about what Reiki is.

The Reiki Federation describes Reiki in the following way:

“Reiki is a natural healing energy activated by intention. It works on every level, not just the physical. The practice of Reiki is an original method of healing, developed by Mikao Usui in Japan early in the 20th Century.”

The Reiki Council defines it this way:

“We live in a world of energy that nourishes and maintains all living things. When this energy flows uninterrupted there is balance and harmony within and around us and we experience a sense of wellbeing. There are many variations of Reiki, but in essence Reiki works at bringing us into balance and is believed therefore to reinforce the body’s natural ability to heal itself at all levels, whether physical, mental, emotional or spiritual. It is a tradition that is open to any belief system.

Reiki is a healing process that anyone can benefit from in the normal course of their life. Research using animals and even bacteria suggests it has the ability to reverse stress-induced conditions. It should not, however, be regarded as a cure for conditions. As a natural form of healing Reiki can support and enhance other forms of treatment.”

So essentially Reiki is a system of energy healing. It is true that we are as much energy as we are physical, if not more so, and that keeping this energy body healthy is just as important as the physical. Reiki does this by channelling pure healing energy into the recipient to assist with their own innate healing ability to disperse blockages and bring the body back into homeostasis.

In addition, it is a completely safe and non-invasive treatment, with no manipulation, meaning it is accessible to anyone and everyone. The healing can go to any level, whether it be the physical, emotional, mental or spiritual. It will simply go where it is needed to restore balance.

What is it like? I describe having Reiki like being wrapped in a blanket of unconditional love. It is my favourite therapy for this reason. A Reiki session is like drifting into place of calm where your body and mind are able to relax and sink into a deep state of relaxation whilst the healing takes place.
